Are some baby’s unexplained deaths due to toxic gases coming from mattresses?

The Get Rid Of SIDS Project aims to have the Toxic Gas Theory tested thoroughly and scientifically.

The study aims to have all surfaces where a baby sleeps covered with either a rubber cover or clear polythene cover which will prevent gases escaping (if the mattress is used) or prevent the bacteria getting into the mattress (if the mattress is new).

This study would need to be carried out over an 18 month period as the peak risk period for SIDS is 1 – 6 months of age. Babies born in the six months prior to the commencement of the new year when the figure collection commences will still be in the high risk age group so need to be included.

The figures can then be compared to the previous years total to see if there is a significant drop in SIDS and SUDI figures in the state where the study was performed. Also a comparison can be made to determine the rate of decline of the figures compared to other states not participating in the study.

The proposal also encompasses an education package for parents about the Toxic Gas Theory and what they need to do in regard to sleeping, bedding and bed clothes for their baby.

Regardless of whether the Toxic Gas Theory is the main cause of SIDS and SUDI or not, the theory needs to be tested thoroughly and independently. If it turns out this theory has no merit it can be stricken from the list of possibilities knowing that a proper scientific study has been done.
